Fractional CMO or a full-service team for a fintech with one marketer?

If your marketer can organise and deliver the work but needs senior direction, a fractional CMO may be enough. If that same person is also briefing every specialist, chasing approvals and filling delivery gaps, assess who will own the work between strategy meetings.

Start with the work your marketer cannot get to.

An established B2B fintech can have customers, a credible product and plenty of marketing activity while its founder still connects the pieces. The marketer manages the website, briefs a paid-media partner, chases technical input and prepares the sales presentation. A new market or product launch arrives before those commitments are finished.

The first question is where progress breaks down. A direction gap means the team cannot decide which market, proposition or commercial priority deserves attention. A capacity gap means the decision is clear but the people needed to execute it are unavailable. An ownership gap means capable people are involved, yet nobody can make the work fit together.

Look at the last campaign that slipped. Identify the unresolved decision, the missing work and the person who had to intervene. If the answer keeps returning to your lone marketer, adding another specialist may increase the coordination burden. If delivery is reliable but the target and message keep changing, senior direction may be the more useful addition.

When a fractional CMO can be sufficient.

A direction-focused fractional CMO mandate can fit a business with a capable internal marketing owner and reliable delivery partners. It can give leadership an experienced counterpart for positioning, priorities, budgets and consequential decisions without adding a full-time executive role.

Check that your marketer has the authority and protected time to translate those choices into briefs, coordinate partners and review the results. A weekly strategy conversation is only useful if someone can act on it during the rest of the week. Product, sales and compliance input also need named owners and workable approval times.

Fractional CMO providers vary. Some offer operational leadership or their own delivery team. Read the proposed responsibilities, rather than assuming the title tells you what is included. The distinction in this article is between a direction-focused remit and a remit that also owns coordinated delivery.

Compare responsibility before comparing price.

Use this table to assess a proposal against your existing team. A responsibility can remain internal, sit with a partner or be shared, but someone must be able to decide what happens next.

A product launch with one marketer.

Consider a hypothetical payment infrastructure vendor that has found product-market fit and wants to launch an additional proposition. Its marketer has a designer and a paid-media freelancer, while the founder makes the positioning decisions. The sales team needs a use-case page, a concise evaluation deck and a clear follow-up process.

If the marketer can run the launch but needs help choosing the segment and sharpening the business case, a fractional CMO mandate could cover the gap. The existing partners can produce the assets, and the marketer can coordinate input and delivery.

Now change one condition: the marketer is already responsible for the existing campaigns and has no room to manage the launch. The designer waits for approved claims, the media partner waits for a landing page and sales receives responses without an agreed qualification rule. Strategy advice alone leaves that work unresolved. An integrated engagement would need to assign coordination, add the missing capability and establish the approval and handoff process.

This is an illustrative decision scenario, not a Perfomato client result. The useful test is whether the proposal gives each dependency an owner and leaves the internal marketer with a realistic remit.

What an integrated team takes on, and what remains yours.

Perfomato’s Full-Service Marketing combines CMO-level direction from Michel Faas, day-to-day ownership by a Growth Lead and specialists assembled around an agreed commercial mandate. That mandate might be pipeline development, a new market or a proposition launch.

Your marketer can remain an important part of the team. Existing partners can also stay where their work fits. Agree who briefs them, who reviews the output and who decides when priorities compete. An integrated team should make those responsibilities clearer, without making the founder the default project manager.

Your leadership still owns business priorities, product decisions, access to expertise and final approvals. Sales owns the buying conversation and commercial close. Perfomato connects marketing activity to sales-accepted opportunities and follows progression, with clear limits on attribution. The client retains accounts, data and custom deliverables; Perfomato retains its reusable methods.

Compare the complete cost of covering the gap.

A smaller strategic fee can be appropriate if execution and coordination are already funded and working. If they are missing, compare the proposed fee together with the specialist work and internal capacity still required. An integrated fee is only comparable when its scope and exclusions are equally clear. Neither model is automatically cheaper.

Perfomato starts Full-Service Marketing with a four-week Build at €15,000. Two focused sprints establish the strategy and operating foundations, prepare the first priority campaign for launch and define the ongoing Run scope. Run has a custom fixed monthly fee, with an indicative range of approximately €5,500 to €12,500 or more, depending on the work. Media spend is separate.

Run uses continuous two-week sprints. A Boost redirects existing Run capacity towards strategy and setup when the priority changes; it is not a separate paid package. Read the Full-Service Marketing page for continuation credits and the operating terms, then compare the actual mandate with your needs.

Ask for a working model you can put to use.

Before choosing, ask the provider to walk through a real upcoming campaign. Who resolves the positioning question, gets technical input, commissions the assets and follows up when an approval stalls? Ask what your marketer will stop doing, what they will retain and how sales feedback changes the next sprint.

Then ask what will exist at the end of the first engagement, what depends on your team and how handover works if the relationship ends. A useful proposal makes outputs, decision rights and exclusions visible.

Choose the smallest complete remit that covers the gap. Senior direction may be sufficient for a team ready to execute. Full-Service Marketing fits when direction, coordinated ownership and specialist delivery need to work together. If your team already owns strategy and coordination, Perfomato’s secondary offer, Specialists on Demand, can supply a defined capability.
